The Barbican

Project Description

The Barbican Centre is the largest performing arts centre in Europe situated in the heart of the Barbican Estate, North London. The Centre hosts classical and contemporary music concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and art exhibitions.

The Centre underwent a long development process throughout its original build and only opened after the surrounding housing complex, Barbican Estate, was completed. It is owned, funded and managed by the City of London Corporation and was built as the City's gift to the nation at a cost of £161million and handed over to the public in 1982.

The Barbican Centre has undergone many developments since was first completed, including a cosmetic improvement scheme in the mid-1990s and further significant refurbishment in 2005-06.

There will be 69 apartments in total when the conversion has been completed in the New Year 2010 and will offer one, two and three bedroom living spaces for a cross section of people including single individuals, couples or families and will offer the most up-to-date interiors that will complement what the Barbican Estate already provides.
